Telephone Scam – Asking for Social Security and Medicare Card Information

PacificSource recently discovered a telephone scam targeting Medicare members in Oregon and Idaho.

How Does the Scam Work?

A caller says they are from Medicare and asks you to verify that you received a new Medicare member ID card. They also ask for your Social Security number, bank account number or address. The caller may say they are verifying your account information and need to send you important information about your Medicare ID card. The caller may also be unwilling to give you their name and call back number.

Important – do not give the caller your information unless you verify the person is from a company you trust.

PacificSource employees will always identify themselves with their name and a call back number when asked. We will never ask for your social security or bank account number over the phone.

Verify the Caller’s Information

If you are not sure the caller is from Medicare or PacificSource, have them give you the following information:

Ask for the caller’s name and phone number. A PacificSource employee and a Medicare employee will always identify themself and provide a call back phone number when asked.

Ask the caller to give you information about you or your plan that only you or PacificSource would know. Examples might be your date of birth, what plan you are enrolled in, and how much you pay in plan premium. A Medicare or PacificSource employee will have this information.
