Oh Baby…(Maybe)

If you want a tiny addition to your family, you may have a minor complication:

HealthCare.gov’s designers didn’t include a tool for adding new babies to families’ coverage.

The website glitch affects parents who buy private “qualified health plans” through the 36 federal exchanges run by the U.S. Government.

The Associated Press reports that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is telling carriers to have new parents call them directly to add newborns temporarily while it develops a tool to add babies to coverage through HealthCare.gov.

Once the government includes an “Add Baby” button, parents will have to use HealthCare.gov — or a broker, exchange call center or in-person exchange helper — to formally add babies to their coverage.
