Say goodbye to the Social Security number on the Medicare card! It has been years of futile outrage to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) about the Social Security numbers on Medicare cards. Four thousand and five hundred people enroll in Medicare every day. Many of the newer enrollees have expressed deep concern about the Social Security number being used. In about three years the Medicare claim identifying numbers will be selected at random. A chip is also being mentioned to be embed in the card. The change will begin with the new enrollees at the time of enrollment and then the conversion will begin for those already on Medicare to get new numbers and cards.
This is great 50th birthday present for Medicare! (which turned 50 on July 4, 2015.)
