Study: Families Accepting Health Insurance Exchange Help May Owe Refund

The Los Angeles Times (9/10, Terhune) is reporting that a study published in Health Affairs shows some families may owe the government “an undetermined sizable refund if they accept government help on purchasing health insurance within the next year under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.”

The Times wrote, “a raise, bonus or other unexpected income during the year,” may change “eligibility and insurance subsidy amounts”, resulting in “a repayment when the person files income tax forms for 2014.” Experts say they are concerned that the “experience could upset people on the healthcare expansion.”
