End of federal COBRA subsidies expected to increase number of uninsured

McClatchy /Kaiser Health News (8/31, Galewitz) reports that federal COBRA subsidies are ending “Wednesday, raising concerns about how the unemployed will cover those expenses.”  The decision to end the subsidies is attributed to concerns about the deficit. Critics say that the “the end of COBRA subsidies will make continued health coverage impossible,” for a number of people, who “will lose coverage and join the ranks of the uninsured.” According to the Treasury Department, the subsidy helped “as many as 2 million households at a cost of $2 billion in 2009.”
