ACA Quirk Prevents Some Families From Getting Subsidies

The ACA is expected to provide around $10 billion in subsidies this year to make health insurance affordable for low- and middle-income people.

However, a quirk in the law is denying subsidies to a number of low-income people, especially those with families.

One health policy expert at the Urban Institute explained that the “assessment of whether or not employer-based coverage is affordable is based on worker-only coverage, and doesn’t take the cost of family coverage into account.”

As a result, some workers whose plans are deemed “affordable” and do not qualify for subsidies are nevertheless unable to afford coverage for their families.
